GJ City Council Member Elect Richard Brainard Arrested
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Newly-elected city council member Richard Brainard has been arrested for third-degree assault and harassment after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend in his home.
According to a Grand Junction Police affidavit, Brainard was arrested early Saturday morning in Grand Junction.
The affidavit outlines the incident, which involved Cindy Franzen, who told officers she's been dating Brainard for eight months and has lived with him since November.
She says a physical altercation took place in their bedroom, which began over text messages on his phone from a previous girlfriend.
Franzen says she was pushed into the dresser by her chest several times, her hair was pulled and she was grabbed by the arm and face. She also says she was later struck in the face by Brainard, with what she thought to be an open hand, causing her pain and injury.
On Saturday NewsChannel 5 sat down with Franzen and spoke with her about the incident. She says she and her children are coping and trying to move forward. Franzen also says she will not be continuing this relationship further because incidents like this cannot keep happening.
Officials say they cannot yet speculate what this alleged incident could mean for his membership on Grand Junction City Council.
NewsChannel 5 has reached out to Brainard for comment and will continue to provide the latest details as they are released.
