City Conducts Vacancy Surveys

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- City officials say empty buildings within the Grand Junction City limits are slowly filling up.

Officials conduct a survey every three months to get a better idea of how the vacancy trends are going and which areas they're happening in the most.

They say six percent of the square feet used for commercial and industrial spaces within Grand Junction city limits are vacant, which is a continuous decrease since the survey began two years ago.

However, with other large buildings becoming empty, other areas have spiked in vacancy rates.

"Overall, city-wide we are down, there is less vacant space available, and more of the buildings are filling up. We still have a few high-profile vacancy's; that City Market on North Avenue for
instance, and a few new vacancy's such as the Ace Hardware in the Redlands," said Brian Rusche, City of Grand Junction senior planner.

Officials say because of the Ace Hardware that closed in the Redlands, it increased the vacancy rate to 14.8 percent.

Other areas that have growing vacancy rates include, North Avenue, North West Grand Junction City limits area, and the Orchard Mesa area.
