GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- With Christmas over, many trees may be lingering in households, but now residents can dispose them at the Mesa County Composting Facility.

Mesa County is accepting Christmas trees to be dropped off at the Orchard Mesa composting facility, where they will be recycled and made into compost.

The facility asks that before dropping off a tree, make sure all ornaments, decorations, bows, tinsels and the tree stand is off.

Officials say trees can be left out by the curb as well and it will be taken and dumped into a landfill.

However, bringing the tree to the composting facility is more beneficial for the environment.

"Your taking something that we can make into a compost, and by the summer of next year, we will have a product that people can put into their gardens, can be used to plant a tree, can be used to plant shrubbery or a garden. It's something that completes the whole circle. You had it in your home, we make compost out of it, and you're planting again in it. It's a nice use of that tree rather than just throwing it away," said Cameron Garcia, solid waste director.

The exact location of the compost facility is 3071 Highway 50.

They are open Tuesday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
