GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- When it comes to post workout recovery drinks, there are a variety of choices ranging from Gatorade, Powerade, Red Bull and water. With all these choices, it can be hard to decipher what really works when it comes to recovery drinks.

A new study in the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise says low fat chocolate milk may be just what the body needs for success.

Researchers at Connecticut State University The University of Connecticut and Eastern Michigan University, found that when runners refueled with low fat chocolate milk instead of a carbohydrate-only beverage, they performed longer in their next timed run.

The participants ran 28 percent longer and had a 38 percent increase in markers of muscle building.

Research suggests the nutrient profile of low fat chocolate milk is exactly what makes it so effective as a post exercise recovery drink.

They say the high quality protein builds lean muscle and with the right mix of protein and carbohydrates it refuels and replenishes what athletes lose in sweat.
