Child Hit by Car, Brought to Hospital

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- It was a scary Monday morning for one local child after she was hit by a car while walking to school.

According to Colorado State Patrol, around 8:15 a.m. a 5-year-old girl was walking to school along F 1/2 Road with other students.

Authorities say a 39-year-old male driver who was heading westbound along the same road saw the children walking to school and slowed down.

CSP says that's when the 5-year-old girl ran into the street and was struck by the car.

She was rushed to Saint Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

The driver of the car was not cited for any traffic violations.

Authorities are warning pedestrians to always walk facing traffic to help avoid a situation like this.

My son attended Thunder mountain. He was in 4th grade before i let him ride to school, and for the first times, I followed him there and back to make sure he knew the rules. Road speed on F 1/2 is far too fast, sidewalks and lighting is lacking and far too many parents let their kids walk too far, and too young.

I drive on F-1/2 Road nearly every day. When there are students walking, running, riding bikes, skateboards along that road it is really scary. The children (as children will be) are rarely paying attention the the road in the least bit. The drivers must be extra careful as the students have not concept of the danger they are in. The CSP is wrong about the "facing traffic rule on F-1/2 Road, as the walkway is only on the south side of the road. Drivers really need to be extra careful during the school season.

What is really needed along with proper parental supervision is some sidewalks too.

Candice is right. No 5 year old should be walking to school whether it be with friends or alone. Parents need to take responsibility.

Im sorry to say this, but I knew this would happen since they changed the milage to school. That area there are no lights or sidewalks.

I think 5 years old is too young to be walking to school.....
