Central High School Students Compete in ‘Breakfast Challenge’

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Students at Central High School are giving a whole new meaning to the phrase, “The Breakfast Club.” They’ve entered this year’s “Colorado School Breakfast Challenge,” with the chance to win big bucks for the Grand Valley school.

The challenge has one primary goal: to get more students to eat breakfast.

“’The Breakfast Challenge’ program is helping us encourage students to come in here and eat breakfast everyday,” said Liza Hines, Guidance Counselor at Central High School. “We all know that breakfast fuels learning so our students are doing better.”

No Kid Hungry Colorado is hosting the challenge, with a total of 24 Colorado high schools competing to be crowned champion.

Central High School is the only Western Slope school contending.

“Breakfast is the most important food of the day, and it helps you concentrate if you're full and if it tastes good too,” said Brady Rogers, freshman at Central High School.

“It does impact education,” said Dan Sharp, food service director for School District 51. “Studies show that if kids eat breakfast, they perform better in the classroom.”

Sharp says the message behind this new challenge is a great thing for the school, and continues to prove to be successful.

“Even though we are seeing some decreases in lunch, breakfast is held steady and in fact in some schools, like Central High School, because of what they do to promote breakfast, it’s actually growing,” said Sharp.

It’s growing so much that since they started the challenge in September, they've already seen a 34 increase, which may have something to do with the school offering breakfast twice a day.

“We will do a second set of breakfast and that will really help to get another 100 students through that typically wouldn't eat breakfast,” said Sharp.

If the number of students participating in these breakfast clubs continues to rise, the school could win the grand prize worth $4,000.

“Even if we don’t win the grant money, getting kids to eat breakfast is a benefit in itself,” said Hines.

Officials at the school are encouraging parents of children who attend Central High School to get their kids to participate in this challenge.

The competition will continue to run until January 2013.

Wow, I didn't know that there was a bunch of students suffering from malnutrition. The poor things, not even smart enough to pour cereal in a bowl or slam a pop tart in the toaster in the morning. Thank you SD 51 for giving me the opportunity to buy these poor urchins a breakfast.
