Cause of Grand Junction Teen's Death Released as Strangulation

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Mesa County Coroner's Office has confirmed that the manner of death of Grand Junction teen Daniel Richards is homicide.

The cause of death is listed as strangulation. Richards had "bath salt" drugs and marijuana in his system as well as a 0.067 percent blood alcohol level.

Bath salts have been known to cause agitation, an increased heart rate and sudden death.

Authorities with the Grand Junction Police Department say Richards was brought to the hospital by friends after a party on April 10 and he died a few days later.

GJPD officials say there were signs of injury but until now it was not clear what the actual cause of death was.

Authorities will now turn over their information to the district attorney's office to decide if any charges will be filed. They say it's important to note that the use of the word "homicide" does not mean a crime has been committed.
