GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A driver spun out of control Thursday at a busy highway intersection, then hit a light pole and fled the scene.

It happened just before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Witnesses say a man in a green Camaro was turning east at the corner of Highway 6 and 50 and Independent Avenue when he lost control and hit a light pole.

The crash caused the pole to fall onto the highway, stopping traffic.

The driver then fled the scene.

"It was pretty loud. In fact, it was loud enough that when he hit it, I was standing on the porch and I thought that if he'd miss that pole, I might run, because he'd come through the fence," explained Kirby Harris, a witness.

Many witnesses saw what happened and one even followed the driver to the street near Ed Bozarth Chevrolet.

The witness stalled the driver until authorities arrived.

"One of the witnesses followed him to here and stayed with him, talked to him and kept him here until we got here," said Sgt. Jim Creasy from the Grand Junction Police Department.

Traffic heading eastbound on Highway 6 and 50 was diverted away from the pole until it was cleared from the scene.

The crash is under investigation, but authorities say they believe alcohol was a factor.
