Capco Wins Contract to Improve Soldiers' Gear

by KREX News Room

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Capco, a Grand Junction based company, recently won a $35 million defense contract to produce gear for American soldiers.

The company designed a much lighter tripod, which is used to mount machine guns. The tripod functions better; it's also collapsible and can be stowed.

The new design will replace the model that has been in the Army's inventory for about 80 years. The new tripods are 32 pounds, which is 16 pounds lighter than the current version.

Steve Wood, president and CEO of Capco, said, "Their ability to maneuver the weapon will be sped up considerably, and of course the load they have to pack is lighter, although oftentimes they'll replace that soldier's load with more water, more rations, more ammo."

Capco developed the tripod at its own expense and will now be licensing the Army to use the design. Production will begin in about 250 days.
