CPR Education Travels to Fruita Monument

FRUITA, Colo. - Experts say about 93 percent of people found suffering from cardiac arrest outside a hospital will not survive, due to the public's general lack of CPR knowledge.

One company wants to change that, by starting early and teaching life-saving techniques in the classroom.

Professional EMS Education held several classes at Fruita Monument High School on Monday, during which, students learned the basic components of CPR. Those included chest compression and breathing techniques.

"We're putting a big push on this. The district last year donated all kinds of AEDs, one for every school. We've been doing this education for the PULSE program for the last three years. We've certified over 1,200 students in the last three years and hope to reach as many as 5,000 in the next four to five," explained Fidel Garcia, president and owner of Professional EMS Education.

Garcia says cardiac arrest victims have a much greater chance of surviving if CPR has been performed before medical professionals arrive.

These free classes are fully funded through community donations. Anyone interested in donating to the program can do so by going to Alpine Bank, and asking for "The PULSE Program" fund.
