COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Gift cards are becoming easy targets for scammers.

According to KRDO, at several Colorado Springs stores employees have actually pulled several big name cards off their shelves and put them behind the counter, forcing shoppers to now ask for them specifically.

Con artists can get important numbers off of the cards before customers have even bought them.

After scanning the numbers, they watch when it is activated and they buy items online by using your gift card information to purchase it.

Experts recommend inspecting the card before buying it.

Make sure none of the protective stickers are removed and that the codes on the back haven't been scratched off, revealing a pin number.
