CMU Students Show Support for Civil Unions

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Civil unions in Colorado are close to being legalized. This week, Colorado Mesa University students are showing support for the measure.

On Monday, the bill passed in the Senate and now goes to the House, where it's also expected to pass.

The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at CMU has collected more than a hundred postcards to mail to state legislators asking for continued support. Students want representatives to know there is support of the issue on the Western Slope.

Christy Morris, vice president of GSA, said, "I grew up in a town of 300 people out in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. So to come here and be around here where everyone feels like civil unions is going to pass, and being able to be here and share this with my partner is just this fantastic thing."

Casey Sadahiro, president of GSA, said, "I'm being a part of helping and putting this out there. That way people do see, they have people in their lives currently and they are denying people, friends and family members their rights."

The bill would give gay couples rights similar to marriage. More than a dozen states allow for gay marriage or civil unions.
