GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. This Saturday Colorado Mesa University students gathered together to honor fallen Mavericks, students who've passed away. This was the fourth annual Remembrance Day.

Five years ago two students were killed in a car accident, impacting the entire community. The next year, Remembrance Day was created to honor these students.

The event is hosted by the Associated Student Government, and featured various speakers. Among them, John Marshall, the Vice President for Student Services and also the student body president, Telbe Storbeck.

"I think that John Marshall hit it right on the head. It is a sobering time in the spring, I mean the weathers great, everyone's starting to go out we're all getting ready to be active but it's important to reflect on this," Storbeck said,

After the ceremony a balloon release took place outside. Students somberly watched as dozens of maroon and white balloons filled the sky.

Officials say the day honors current students or ones who died shortly after leaving the university.
