GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Figuring out how to pay for college can be difficult. On Sunday, families received free guidance on ways to do it.

Colorado Mesa University hosted the seventh annual College Goal Sunday. This is a national event and was held at 16 locations in Colorado. It aims to provide families with assistance in the financial aid process.

Financial aid counselor at CMU, Marianne Mercado, said, "We hope to just help students and parents alleviate the nervousness about doing a FAFSA, because it appears to be daunting and it's actually a very simple process. It is a very important process for the student to get the aid that they want to go to the schools they want to go to."

The FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, must be completed fora student to receive any type of federal financial aid. That includes grants, work study, student loans and even many scholarships.

Students are encouraged to submit their FAFSA as soon as possible after the first of the year to maximize their chances of receiving aid, because some funding is limited.
