"Brake for Bela" Campaign Encourages Summer Safety
DENVER - A little girl who was struck by a car and survived has inspired a new safety campaign called “Brake for Bela.” According to our sister station KCNC, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages two to 14. Bela Estes was only five years old when she was hit by a car while playing with friends outside her home in Arvada. Bela is nine years old now and she joins her family in raising awareness during the summer months for both drivers and children to pay attention. “Brake for Bela” is an annual summer awareness campaign on the Front Range that kicks into gear when school is out and kids are about. Studies show that pedestrian deaths increase 16 percent during the summer.
