GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A blown transformer caused some scary moments for commuters who stopped at a local gas station Friday morning.

Just before 7 a.m. fire officials received word that an electrical transformer was emitting smoke next to the Shell Gas station on Horizon Drive.

Witnesses on the scene say they dialed 911 after seeing flames coming out of the electrical box.

The incident left more than 1,100 people without power, including many business along Horizon Drive. Some traffic lights were out as well.

Xcel quickly had crews on scene to try and get power restored. They were able to get power back on to all residents a few hours after the incident.

Grand Junction police were on scene to help direct traffic while the traffic lights were out, and the Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the flames.

Officials are looking into what caused the transformer to fail.
