Bill to Restrict Teenage Tanning Moves Forward

DENVER - Lawmakers have given initial approval to a proposal to restrict teenagers' use of tanning beds, by requiring them to have permission from parents and doctors.

The bill was sponsored by Westminister Representative Cherylin Peniston who would like to see any teenager under 15 years of age have a doctor's prescription before using a tanning bed.

Although Colorado is one of the few states that does not limit youth tanning bed use, NewsChannel 5 found out local salons are already doing their part to keep young customers safe, regardless of the current laws.

Scott Young, owner of Tan in Paradise has been in the business for nine years and says he doesn't need legislation to know to protect his teenage customers.

"We're pretty strict about that. We don't let anybody tan under 14, if you're 14 or 15 you can tan but you need a parents signature or approval, and above that then you're legal to tan," said Young.

House Bill 13-1215 is set to prohibit tanning by those under 15 and require parental consent or a doctor's prescription up until the age of 18.

Rendi Tuell is 15 years old, she says she tans everyday for a month before taking a break.

"I had to get my mom to sign since I'm 15 and you have a 15 minute maximum of how long you get to tan," said Tuell.

Like other teens, Tuell says she appreciates law makers concern, but believes it should be the teens decision.

"Watching out for the long term care of those who are short term oriented is a good thing," said Young.

He also says, regardless of legislation, those operating tanning salons should be aware of the dangerous effects of UV rays on young skin and they should make their shops' rules based on that.

"I believe that we have an obligation, a responsibility to our community and to our youth especially," said Young.

A House committee approved HB 1215 in a 6-5 vote, the bill still needs to be approved by the full House.

Don't thank me, thank Barry. I believe the quote originates from Rev Wright. Remember that church he went to for twenty or so years, but couldn't remember a word from? If you would like I could provide you with some more quotes from that book and others. It is really no secret who he is and what he represents.
