New Apartments Open at Colorado Mesa University

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- After months of anticipation, members of the community were finally able to step inside Colorado Mesa University's new apartments on Orchard Avenue. Officials say there is even more expansion to come in the future.

The university is starting to look a lot different than it did a few years ago. Colorado Mesa University student Caleb Delong said, “It was just Huston and all the basic buildings. Then as soon as I got here, they started building all the new facilities and they're really nice.”

John Marshall, the vice president for student services, said, “I wouldn’t have been able to predict where we would be today five years ago.”

Some students have already settled into the new apartments. Others are counting down the days until they too can move in and call them home.

“We’re very excited. We’ve been waiting for this all summer and decided to drive up here last minute to see it,” said CMU student Rachel Nowak.

Tim Foster, president of CMU, said, “This represents our sort of our upper-end for upper-division students. It’s more apartment style, more independent living.”

There are two study rooms per floor. There is also a computer room on the third floor and wireless Internet in the building.

These new apartments are just the beginning of what’s to come for the university. Tony Wegner, the senior vice president of Design West, said, “The new dormitory that’s going to be starting here in a month will essentially be the old dormitory style, which students really want.”

“We’re working on some things on North Avenue in terms of more of an urban setting, shops and that kind of stuff,” said Foster.

Although the university is growing, officials plan on keeping a few things the same, including small class sizes. Foster said, “We’re configured so that we stay right exactly with that model."

Officials say they are the fastest growing four-year institution in the state, but they don’t plan on leaving behind the things that make them Colorado Mesa University.

How much has more does it cost to attend the "new and improved" CMU in 2012 than MSC in 2005? Somebody has to pay for a fancier campus.
