Beginning of the End for Xcel's Cameo Power Plant

Cameo - This week marks the beginning of the end for a piece of Western Slope history. Xcel's power plant in Cameo is getting ready to come down.

The dismantling of the 1,100 acre plant, which stopped its operations in December 2010, is expected to begin by the end of the year. A $5 million decommissioning contract for the plant was just awarded to the Gilmore Team, which will subcontract the work to multiple firms. However, because of environmental concerns due to the age of the 50-year-old plant, precautions are being taken first.

"The first thing they'll do is go after the asbestos, and we need to have the asbestos abated and made safe before we do any of the actual demolition work. So there'll be several months here where it doesn't look like much is happening, but we're rendering the place safe for people to go work in," explained Fred Eggleston, an area manager for Xcel Energy.

Meetings start this week, but it could still be another couple years before the plant is completely dismantled. There's no word yet on a future plan for the site.
