GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Stocker Stadium was filled with noise Thursday as 12 bands gathered to compete for the state title.

Bands from across the Western Slope had to have competed in one of five regional competitions to earn one of the 75 slots available in the statewide showdown.

Eight judges looked for overall effect, as well as ensemble and individual performances quality.

"It's very competitive. What you can figure is one minute of show takes about one week of prep," said Kathy Joseph, music supervisor for School District 51.

"We give them exactly the same attention, the same fairness," said Wayne Manzanares, the chief judge.

There were a total of about 1,000 students competing.
