BLM Rounding Up Wild Horses in Danger of Low Water Supplies

by KREX News Room
by Cori Coffin

MEEKER, Colo.- The Bureau of Land Management has begun roundup of some wild horses running low on water south of Rangely.

The BLM brought water to the horses in the West Douglas Herd Area last month, but that wasn't a sustainable solution.

The BLM will now use water to gather up to 50 horses in a process that could take up to a month.

Panels will be added gradually around an area containing the artificial water supply until a gate is finally added and closed, trapping the horses inside.

Animal advocates, however, have questioned the BLM's motives because the roundup area is not officially managed by the BLM.

Really David, Have you been up to Texas Mountain? I have and the horses were never in trouble. I saw many seeps and springs in the area and many healthy horses. BLM has misrepresented the situation. I hiked six days in the area and the horses had plenty of forage for grazing also. And since there has been so much rain up there now, why are they continuing the roundup? Watering the horses was never their intent. Bait traping was always the goal. And no, we don't have all this free time your talking about. And oh, by the way, horse advocates just picked up almost 800 lbs of barbed wire in Sand Wash. Were you there to help?

Since the "animal advocates" have enough free time to dream up reasons for whining, they should instead volunteer to help with the roundup.
