BLM Goes Forward With Sale of Parcels in North Fork Valley

by KREX News Room
by Kristina Kuestner

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Bureau of Land Management announced Friday that they will allow the controversial leasing of the 20 parcels in the North Fork Valley.

The 20 parcels equaling about 20,000 acres, will be offered at the BLM's February 2013 Lease Sale.

The North Fork parcels were previously scheduled for lease in August of 2012 but received pushback from residents in Paonia, Hotchkiss and Crawford. At that time, various members of the community voiced their concerns about the environmental impact in those rural areas.

There are three coal mines in the area, but the region is also home to many wineries and farms.

NIMBY, yes get bon with it and the challenge is for the mining to be done in compliance with all local enviro and other regulations, same as the development of wineries and agricultural ventures i expect.

Drill drill drill! To those of you whining about the drilling, lead by example. Sell your car and call the utility company and tell them to shut off the gas and the power immediately or shaddup about it!

We moved from the area years ago out of employment necessity. It deeply saddened me. Between this and what I read on the DCI site about MJ, it saddens me even more that the beautiful area of Crawford will never be the same. So very, very sad.

The air will be polluted with the wafting of contaminated evaporation ponds. The roads will be ruined and dust will also fill the air, the pristine land will forever be tarnished all for the love of money! Jobs you say? Don't bet on it since they bring their own workers in! Way to go Delta County!

The aquifers will be wrecked, and all vegetation will perish.
