DURANGO, Colo. (AP)- Authorities say a 23-year-old Durango man was killed and another was injured when their backcountry skiing group was caught in an avalanche near Silverton.

The Durango Herald reports Peter Carver died Saturday afternoon while skiing north of Gladstone outside the boundaries of Silverton Mountain Ski Area.

One member of the group suffered a possible broken femur, while a third escaped the slide without serious injuries.

Forecasters with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center are expected to visit the scene to determine what triggered the avalanche.
