Assault Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A man accused of assaulting three people with a baseball bat appears before a Mesa County judge.
Michael Renteria Sr. pleaded not guilty Thursday morning, after his defense attorney and prosecutors were unable to come to a plea deal.
Renteria is facing 21 charges including 17 felonies for his role in a February brawl. In addition to a first degree murder after deliberation charge, Renteria Sr. is facing 10 various counts of assault with a deadly weapon, five counts of menacing and one count of burglary.
An arrest affidavit says Renteria and his son Michael Renteria Jr. arrived at an address on Glen Drive this past February to pick up a child when an altercation occurred.
Officers say Renteria Sr. beat three people with a bat while his son, Renteria Jr., shot another person in the leg.
All four people were sent to the hospital with various degrees of injuries.
His trial is scheduled to begin on March 3, 2014.
