Animal Services Receives High Tech Grant

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The next time you adopt a dog from Mesa County Animal Services, chances are your canine will come with a high tech device.

The microchip will be implanted on all dogs before they are adopted out to homes so if the dog happens to get loose, it can be returned home saving MCAS time and pet owners' potential impound fees.

Animal services received a $9,000 grant from the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund.

The fund is partially funded by the "Support a Shelter" license plates.

"While we do scan animals for microchips, we have to then call that chip agency and wait for a call back. Normally that animal ends up at the shelter. With this we'll have the information in our database so we'll be able to avoid that call and hopefully take the animal directly home instead of bringing it here," said MCAS director Penny McCarty.

The shelter receives chips at a discounted price of $9 per chip.

However, they adopt out so many dogs, chances are all the chips will be used up by next year.

Last year, MCAS found homes for 1,500 dogs.
