After Losing Everything in Fire, Donations Help Family Get Back on Track

Local Christian group helped find donors to support family

The Grand Junction community is helping a family in need after they lost nearly everything in a fire. Two weeks ago, the McKays and their two young children were forced out of their home when an old coffee maker sparked a blaze inside their apartment at the Racquet Club Apartments along Orchard Avenue.

To add insult to injury, thieves stole what few possessions the family of four had left after the fire was put out.

But with the help of the local Christian group HOPE Unlimited, the McKays are back on their feet.

HOPE Unlimited found donors who gave the family new furniture, shoes, toys, food, beds, and a baby crib for the McKay's 1-year-old daughter.

"Thank you, the people of Grand Junction, and everybody who helped us out!" said Amanda McKay. "It's just great. We're back on track, we're going to move on, and it's just great. I appreciate all the help everyone has given us."

Vicki McGee, the executive director for HOPE Unlimited, said the response was immediate when she put the request out for donations to help the McKays. Along with individual donors, she said Nisley Elementary, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, and America's Mattress all pitched in.

The McKays are also working with HOPE Unlimited to give their kids a Merry Christmas. McGee says HOPE Unlimited is asking the community to adopt the McKays or any of the other 30 families who need help for the holidays.

McGee says if you adopt a family, you provide gifts for the kids, along with a Christmas dinner for the whole family.

If you want to adopt a family, you can send an email to hopeunlimitedmesacounty@gmail.com. More information is available on their website www.hopeunlimited.us.
