GUNNISON COUNTY, Colo. - The Colorado State Patrol is investigating an accident that killed two children Saturday morning east of Gunnison.

Officials say the accident happened around 8 a.m. on Highway 50 near mile post 169.

A Chevy Cobalt traveling westbound lost control on the snowpacked highway and spun into the eastbound lane, where a Chevy Beretta struck it.

Two child passengers in the Cobalt, a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were both wearing seatbelts, but did not survive.

The boy died at the scene. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Cobalt sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Beretta had minor injuries.

Neither excessive speed, drugs nor alcohol are considered factors in the crash. The snowpacked roadway had been plowed prior to the crash and snow reportedly was falling at the time of the crash.

No charges have been filed against either driver as of Saturday evening.
