Abortion Outlaw to be Presented at Capitol

DENVER - The 2013 Colo. general assembly has brought with it a slew of controversial new bills as well as some old bills that fail last year, including a bill outlawing abortion.

"It's no different of an issue than it was 50, 100 years ago," said Rep. Jared Wright, R-54.

"The voters themselves have spoken on this issue, repeatedly, in mass," said Karl Castleton, co-chair for Mesa County Democrats.

"It's a question that comes up a lot and it deserves a lot of discussion," explained Stephanie Hyrupe, a volunteer counselor for the non-profit Pregnancy Center in Grand Junction.

House Bill 1033 would outlaw any and all cases of abortion including rape or incest.

The bill would also outlaw prescription drugs that cause the death of a fetus and would make performing an abortion a Class 3 felony.

That level of conviction could bring up to 24 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

Similar bills in 2008, 2010 and 2012 attempted to bestow "personhood" status on fetuses, making it a crime to kill an unborn baby at any stage of pregnancy.

"This is a very private thing that they're trying to get government involved in," said Castleton.

"I do look at it as homicide that we, as a society, have incorrectly justified," explained Wright.

Despite the wide failure margins in the past, Wright, among other Republicans, is ready to rehash the issue.

"It won't be easy, but I look forward to having the debate," he said.

Pro-choice advocates think it's an empty attempt.

"I really think this is one of those things they are introducing so they can say they introduced it. It will go nowhere. It's a waste of time," Castleton said.

Colo. became the first state to legalize abortion in cases of rape, incest or medical emergency in 1967. But still, 87 percent of counties do not provide abortions, including Mesa County.

"Its just a much much deeper issue than whether or not its legal," explained Hyrupe.

The bill does not restrict the sale and use of birth control.

Outlaw abortion? That's unthinkable, in fact, the right to murder your own child shouldn't stop at childbirth. Imagine how much more civil teenagers would be if they knew their parents could still pull the plug on them.

Liberals always support abortion and want to kill children all the way to full devlopement. But these are the say people who want to take guns away, because they claim people are being killed. What a bunch of hipocrits.

It's a "very private thing" to kill anyone you want to kill. Why do we have all of these stupid laws trying to stop that?
