A Different Kind of Independence Day Celebration

PALISADE, Colo.- Hundreds of people were out celebrating Independence Day in a new way on Wednesday.

With fireworks banned all throughout Colorado, it left many celebrating by participating in parades, barbecues and different games, but there were definitely no fireworks. "I'm concerned. I'm glad they're not doing it. I'm concerned about the big fires and we've got a lot of dry land," said Dawn Carstens, a Palisade resident.

Many children said they missed the fireworks, but still had a great Fourth of July. "We always have fun even without fireworks, but fireworks make it more fun," said Drew Schaarr, a Palisade resident.

With the potential threat posed by fireworks this season, many folks say one Independence Day without bright lights in the sky is fine by them. "I was pleased to hear that Grand Junction canceled. I didn't think they were going to. I think it's good. It shows patriotism," said Carstens.

Palisade held many activities, including a water balloon toss, tug of war and water fight. "I got wet over at the fire station where you get sprayed by water, and I ate some awesome ice cream," said Iralind Hayworth, a Palisade resident.

Even though it was a different Fourth of July, it was one the kids say they'll never forget. "It was lots of fun. It was a blast," said Nathan Howard.

We had a fireworks ban notice posted on our fire hydrant but if anyone listened to the scanner, our local law enforcement was out handling tons of fireworks being set off. I hope ALL these people were fined. I'm guessing if over 100 people were fined at $700 each...we could be looking at some serious money!! So, were they indeed fined or did they again just get a slap on the wrist and once the officers had left they started lighting fireworks again. If the fires in our state didn't get any ones attention, how about we set fire to your house and see what you do!!
