DENVER (AP) - A man convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at Denver International Airport has been sentenced to a term of six years to life in prison.

The Denver Post reports a judge handed down the sentence Friday to Noel Bertrand, a former U.S. Marine embassy guard.

Bertrand was convicted in September of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman in a deserted airport concourse in 2011.

His lawyer had argued that that the woman had consensual sex with Bertrand then regretted it.

Bertrand and the victim were both from Oregon.

She testified that after having drinks, the two moved to an airport concourse where he attacked her after she refused a kiss. She told jurors she didn't scream because she was being choked.

Two airline mechanics intervened when they saw her struggling.
