City Council Commits $3 Million to Avalon Theatre Project

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Avalon Theatre renovation project gets a big boost from from the Grand Junction City Council.

In a 4-2 vote, council members decided to triple the original amount of money requested.

The city of Grand Junction is a shared stakeholder in the project, along with the Downtown Development Authority and the Avalon Theatre Foundation.

On Wednesday night the City Hall auditorium was filled with members of the Avalon Theatre Foundation and supporters of the project. Councilman Jim Doody suggested increasing the requested amount of $1 million toward the project to $3 million instead.

After the decision was made, hugs were shared by supporters, some who described the situation as being "sticky at times."

Council members in support of the amount said the expansion of the Avalon is an "economic stimulus project," and that the arts have been neglected and it's time to give back.

The DDA has already committed $3 million to the project, while City Council previously committed $110,000 for the design process before voting to commit $3 million more Wednesday night.

At this point the rest of the funds must be raised by the Avalon Theatre Foundation to complete the project.

Project officials say this is a major step toward the completion of the project, which will cost between $6 million and $7 million for the initial renovations and up to an additional $7 million for the entire expansion.

Again I am thankful I never drank the koolaide and purchased a home here. It is clear that the local politicians view everyone as nothing more than a bottomless pit of cash, waiting to be harvested. Where are all the realitor commercials telling us: it's a great time to buy a home, housing prices have bottomed! LOL.

Just saw the 14million dollar addition artist rendering to expand the Avalon... absoulutely hiddeous... yah, lets graft a 1970's style glass room addition to a classic old theater..... leave the theater like it is...ok, ok...replace those uncomfortable seats...lol.. but lets build a new theater somewhere....and make it a class act, not just a room addition that further clogs up the down town area....
