Mystery Surrounds Child's Death on Grand Mesa, While Another is Hospitalized

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- Mystery surrounds the death of a young child on the Grand Mesa, and there's the possibility a medical investigation could turn into a criminal one.

Original reports came in around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday that two children were found in a vehicle off Highway 65 and Powderhorn Road, right at the base of the ski resort.

The children are believed to be 2 and 4 years old; it's unknown whether they are male or female.

It's also unknown whether the vehicle was running or if it was abandoned, and whether the parents were on scene.

When NewsChannel 5 cameras arrived on scene, there were two vehicles there: a passenger car and an SUV. Both vehicles were on the side of one of the main roads leading up to Powderhorn Resort.

There were no homes or buildings in the immediate vicinity.

Reports into the Mesa County Sheriff's Office indicated that both children were experiencing some sort of severe medical issues.

By the time authorities arrived on scene one child had passed away, and CareFlight rushed the other to Saint Mary's Hospital.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office is investigating what exactly happened leading up to the 911 call.

They say until the coroner completes an autopsy, they will not know whether this is a medical investigation or a criminal one.

No mention of the parents. Where were they? Sounds like an abandonment to me. Poor children. Prayers!

Uh what about the 20 or so homes in the Powderhorn subdivision right where the vehicle was found? And the condos and other homes surrounding the area? No homes I think you need to get your facts straight...sad story no matter what you report, hearts & prayers to parents, family and friends
