GRAND JUNCTION, Colo Grand Valley dog owners decked out their pets in holiday costumes, competing in the first-ever Canine Christmas. The event was put on by the Center for Independence and the money raised will go towards the organization.

All dogs in the community were invited to participate. The pooches competed to win prizes in five different categories. After the competition, pets got their pictures taken with Santa.

Lexi Sherwood, volunteer coordinator for the Center for Independence, said, "It's supposed to be silly, it's supposed to be fun, it's an opportunity for people to come out, either bringing their dogs or just coming out to watch. We have elves, we have princesses we have angels, so, we have all kinds of costumes, great costumes."

One specific area money will will go toward is a photography program for people with disabilities.

Organizers say they hope to make Canine Christmas an annual event.
