Officials Developing Visitor Management Plan for Monument

MESA COUNTY, Colo.The National Park Service is developing a plan to manage visitor activities along Rim Rock Drive within the Colorado National Monument, and they're asking for public input.

In the past, park officials have had to look at each individual request for park use. This past year, there's been over 60 of them.

By developing a plan for reviewing special events, officials believe time will be saved, and a greater transparency will exist for the decision-making process.

Some special events include sporting events, bicycle tours, organized picnics and weddings.

Lisa Eckert, the superintendent of the Colorado National Monument, said, "Should there be a cap on the numbers of picnics that are reserved in a day or the numbers of people in a wedding, and by putting it all together in a plan, when someone requests an event, it will be much easier and faster for us."

A schedule for the planning process, including opportunities for public involvement in development of the plan, will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Meetings will be held in different locations throughout the valley.
