GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Mesa County Animals Services wants to help residents keep their pets safe and happy this Halloween.
Officials say Halloween can be a traumatic time for pets. However, with some careful planning folks can avoid these pitfalls.
They say it's a good idea to keep pets away from lit pumpkins. Also, keep pets inside if they're not friendly around a lot of people. Officials also note that pets are allergic to many foods and some can be very toxic.
Tonya McNeil with J&M Aquatics and Pet Center, said, "No candy, chocolate to any animals whatsoever, regardless dogs, cats. If you take your dog out at night it's always good to have a reflective collar so if it does break away there's a lot people out walking their dogs at night with all the trick or treaters. They get excited, they could break off."
Officials also say to make sure pets like their costumes, because many animals can become aggravated by them.
