Following a Dream, Stitch by Stitch
KREX News Room
MONTROSE, Colo. One Montrose woman is proving that it's never too late to follow your dreams. With a lifetime of knowledge and help from her family, the doors to her first business open on Thursday.
Ludene Smith says she's always liked making beautiful things. Like the product she creates, every detail of the business has been stitched with a purpose.
"I've always sewn, my whole life. Even when the kids were little I made their school clothes," said Smith.
At age 74, she's decided to make her passion her business.
She's invested in the best, "This is called quilt master. It took two front loaders to take it off the truck and get it through the back doors. As it sews it shows the pathway of where the stitches are going to go."
"My savings was dwindling fast and I thought well, this way maybe I can make enough money to keep living," Smith said.
While it hasn't opened yet, her store has paid her in other ways, "My husband passed away 10 years ago and I was just I was getting to be an old grouch, and I decided I couldn't stand myself so I have to keep busy."
Taking those who know her the best by surprise. She says her kids responded with, "'Mom, do you know what you're doing?'" She replied back, "No, but that okay! But they're behind me."
While she's not sure what the future holds, she hopes a little more beautiful.
