Halloween Costume Safety

GRAND JUNCTION,Colo. Halloween is approaching and local fire departments and business owners want people to be safe this year.
“The big thing with safety on a costume is that if you are purchasing a mask or if your costume has a mask make sure you have good visibility on the mask," said Ken Dixon, owner of Mad Margaret’s.
Dixon says one safety precaution people should be aware of is being able to be seen at night. He recommends using reflectors and says there are a lot of products out there that can help.
"Reflectors, there's a lot of reflective material out there and they can just tape it to the sleeves and pant legs of the costume," said Dixon.
The Grand Junction Fire Department says a safe costume comes from a well-known retail store that has information about the costume.
"They're the ones that are actually for sale by the manufacturers, when you actually buy from a retail location. They're going to have a bag and a package and things that will actually go into safety details,” said Grand Junction Firefighter Derek Trombetta.
The Grand Junction Fire Department says the main safety precaution on Halloween is being safe while driving.
"Take it a little slower be a little bit more, have your head on a swivel a little bit and pay attention. There's a lot of kids out there a lot people running around that may not necessarily paying attention as much as they would be,”said Trombetta.
"Kids are going to get excited about seeing the other kids and they're excited about the candy and they’re not paying attention," said Dixon.
Firefighters also recommend also wearing bright clothing, carrying a flash light and to be supervised by a parent or guardian. They also recommend using a flashlight in your pumpkins instead of a candle.
