Gun Control Measures Being Debated in Colo.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A package of gun control measures moved forward earlier this week and Coloradans are speaking out on them.

Seven gun-related measures are being considered.

- BACKGROUND CHECKS: House Bill 1229 would add a background-check requirement for many guns sold in private transactions.

- MAGAZINE LIMITS: House Bill 1224 limits gun ammunition magazines to 15 rounds.

- FIREARM BAN FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENDERS: Senate Bill 197 would expand a ban on gun ownership for people convicted of certain domestic-violence offenses.

- GUN LIABILITY: Senate Bill 196 adds legal liability for gun sellers and owners.

- GUNS ON CAMPUS: House Bill 1226 would end Colorado’s unusual law barring public college campuses from banning concealed weapons.

- ONLINE GUN TRAINING: Senate Bill 195 would require people seeking concealed carry permits to take gun training courses in person.

- BACKGROUND CHECK FEES: House Bill 1228 would revive fees for gun purchasers who need background checks.

Some of the measures sparking the most debate include restricting ammunition magazines and expanded background checks.

Mike Will, owner of Willful Firearms Training, said, "They don't know how they would enforce it, right now we don't have enough law enforcement on the streets to take care of the crime that we have. Now you're talking about every single transaction of a firearm between citizens? I don't even know how they would enforce that."

Will notes that people will most likely turn to other states to purchase high-capacity magazines, if the related measure passes.

On Friday, all seven bills will be heard, in what is expected to be a marathon hearing.

How about mandatory prison sentences for gun crimes. This might solve the problem of criminals using guns to commit crimes.

I will concede that concealed carry applicants should attend the class in person. The rest simply do not address the problem of gun violence by thementally ill using stolen guns.
