Permit Approved For Gas Plant Near DeBeque

DEBEQUE, Colo. This week Mesa County commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a conditional use permit for a natural gas processing plant near DeBeque.
Gas processing will include removal of impurities, compression, removal of natural gas liquids and piped delivery of high pressure natural gas into a nearby transmission line.
Local officials say they see some benefits to the plant, however, some residents who live within a one mile radius around it say it does not belong there.
One of those residents, Kim Heidel, said, "That's what planning didn't like, that we were too emotional about it. Well, it's our home, it's our lives, and the lives of everyone out there will be impacted, and it will be damaging to every property owner out there."
Town manager Guy Patterson said, "It's an indication of increased industry activity for natural gas, that's a good thing. As you know, the areas hit a slump recently, it's affected our town. So we're hoping to see some increase in activity."
Heidel believes the noise and the smell from the plant will force her to move. However, she understands why the county commissioners voted the way they did.
