Panhandling in city streets is still legal. That’s because the Grand Junction City Council shot down two emergency ordinances Monday night that would have made it illegal to panhandle in medians and near signed intersections. The city drafted the proposals after they got a number of complaints of aggressive solicitation.
Those opposed to the ordinances said they violate their free speech rights and criminalize homelessness. Even though the ordinances were not passed Monday night, the council expects to vote on similar measures in the coming weeks.
