Conservatives gathered to meet the candidates and learn the issues at Confluence Park in Delta Friday night. Estimates from Delta Police at the Tea Party in the Park stand at about 300 people. It was put on by the Western Slope Constitutional Patriots and they say it’s not a right or left thing, it’s a patriotic American thing.
Attendees were there to learn about the issues. They say they want one major thing: for government to return to the fundamentals of the Constitution.
“This gathering is to get people familiar with the issues get them informed so they can make informed decisions,” said Liz Matz of the Western Slope Constitutional Patriots.
They say that the government has gotten too big and that the people need to take their country back.
“What we gotta do is get government outta the way. That’s our biggest problem. With government in the way, we can’t grow businesses, and if we can’t grow businesses. We can’t hire more employees, and that’s where we stand today,” said Ray Scott, Candidate for House District 54.
Some of the group was made up of Tea Party members. They’ve endorsed Ray Scott for House District 54 and Bob McConnell for the 3rd Congressional District race.
In all the meeting was full of passionate people looking to learn more.
“You know, our Founders said in order for this to work, this great system this Constitution, we need an educated electorate. And that’s what these people are doing getting educated on the issues,” said Bob McConnell, candidate for the 3rd Congressional District.
The other main message during the event was to vote in the primaries. Those are coming quickly August 10th and then the general election is in November.
