Imagine lifting a bell for an hour and burning more calories than running a six-minute mile. There’s one growing workout trend that will let you do just that. Kettlebells are small weights that allow you to get the cardio and strength workout in less time.
Grand Junction’s Crossfit Red implements the kettlebell in its circuits. “It’s like a big toy. A toy for adults,” said Crossfit Red owner and coach Patrick Bland.
Most people haven’t heard of them. While they’re not new, the fitness routine is up and coming. “It was actually born in Russia. It was an art before it ever became an actual exercise. They basically started to train this art, and found out all of the different health benefits from it,” Bland said.
Health experts say the intense workout can burn up to one thousand calories in an hour. Crossfit Red coaches say it can help you get the lean, toned look that most people want. “Everyone wants it all. But people don’t know that they can get it with kettlebell work. You can get strength, endurance, power, coordination, stamina, cardio, and accuracy,” Bland said.
The small, simple tool is big on results. Recently, the number of kettle bell clubs across the country has surged. “At Crossfit Red, we teach the kettlebell to be an integration versus the end-all product. We find it to strengthen people in ways that nothing else can,” Bland said.
Crossfit Red coaches says the kettleball works with all ages and fitness levels. Bland said the fun is in the swing. “It’s fun because it’s flying. You see it fly in front of you. You can’t do that with a lot of things. It’s in motion. The weight is in motion,” Bland said.
You can buy kettle bells online and in stores. It costs anywhere from $10 to $100. Crossfit coaches, however, say to maximize your performance and calorie burn, learn the moves first from a coach or trainer.
