It’s a modular unit with an east classroom and a west classroom, but it’s the first school in decades for Glade Park. In Glade Park, a cattle guard replaces a crossing guard. Up and around a gravel road stands Glade Park Community School.
“There was nothing here a year ago. It was completely empty,” explains Glade Park mom, Karyn Bechtel.
The school is the newest, and only school on the other side of the monument. “I’m excited for my kids to go to school with other kids that are in the community and actually neighbors.”
Four Glade Park moms started talking about the possibility, and after five years of planning, the pieces began to fall into place, and they became school starters.
“Every time we would think we were inching closer, something else would come up,” Bechtel says.
The two-classroom building will have 20 students, kindergarten through second grade along with one teacher and full-time aide. Bechtel’s daughter is enrolled in kindergarten at the Glade Park, and says she sees a huge benefit to the small class sizes. “The teachers will really get to know each student and be able to know each student’s individual needs.”
Glade Park will follow district standards, but is allowing for a more hands-on approach.
The first day of school is Wednesday starting at 8:15 in the morning. Students will go to school Monday through Thursday.Friday will be a teacher planning day. School District 51 is providing Glade Park with funding for the staff, bills, and basic supplies. The rest is donations from the town. The school plans to add on a grade every year.
The staff is still trying to start a garden. If you have any plants you want to donate, take them to 16250 DS Road.
