Grand Junction, Colo.
In America, disabilities affect one in five individuals and their families. A disability impairs any major life function from walking to talking. But a local program is helping people with special needs focus on their independence. Grand Junction’s Center for Independence is helping those with special needs gain living skills in areas like Housing Support to employment opportunities.
Heidi Kendall, 29, was born with cerebral palsy. “It is a brain injury,” Kendall explained.
There was a lack of oxygen to her brain at birth that makes her muscular system and coordination weak. Bound to a wheelchair, Kendall is determined to not let her disability define her.
“I was raised that you’re not any different than anyone else. The only difference is that God made you special.”
Kendall says her positive outlook has a lot to do with her involvement with the Center for Independence. “The Center just helps orchestrate activities.”
The Center’s even taught her how to ride a bike; a hand cycle bike. “And there are volunteers that help with directions,” she said.
“She’s always smiling,” Linda Taylor said.
Taylor, Director of the Independence Center, admires Kendall’s attitude and the added challenge of being a parent dealing with a disability. “We want to help make her world barrier free so she can be an engaged mother,” Taylor explained.
The Center has put her in contact with caregivers that help her live more independently. “It is an awesome program. People with special needs can now live and thrive in the community,” Kendall said.
Saturday night, the Center for Independence is hosting a fundraiser at the Grand River Winery starting at 6:30. There will be a concert and silent auction. Tickets are $20 at the door.
