It’s the maximum sentence for the man who admits to dragging Buddy the dog. On Friday morning, a federal judge ruled that Steven Romero will spend time in prison. 38-year-old Steven Romero was sentenced to three years in prison, and following that, he will be supervised for a year.
Romero admitted to dragging Buddy the Dog to death on the Colorado National Monument back in December. Friday will be the first day of Romero’s three-year sentence.
Evidence such as surveillance video and pictures backed by court papers showed that Romero tied a rope to the dog’s neck and dragged Buddy behind a pickup truck until the dog was dead.
In addition to Romero’s sentencing, the judge ordered him to pay nearly $1,000 in fines and restitution.
News Channel 5 spoke with Buddy’s owner within minutes of hearing the news. They say they appreciate all the support they’ve gotten from the community and are relieved to see the case come to a close. “Personally, I really think he should have gotten more, but there’s really no more that they can give him, but I’m really happy he’s going to have to spend the next three years behind bars and think about what’s he’s done and the effect of it,” says Sacha Leber, Buddy’s owner.
Romero’s sister Melissa Lockhart is charged with being involved with Buddy’s death and trying to cover it up. Lockhart’s case is still pending. If convicted, Lockhart faces up to three years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
