Glenwood Springs, Colo.
A 17-mile stretch of Interstate 70 remains closed in Western Colorado after a rock slide punched gaping holes in a bridge and left huge boulders on the highway, but no injuries or damage to vehicles were reported. The Colorado Department of Transportation says the slide struck at about midnight Sunday near the Hanging Lake Tunnel in Glenwood Canyon, a deep and narrow chasm about 110 miles west of Denver. Both lanes remained closed from Glenwood Springs east to the town of Dotsero.
CDOT spokeswoman Stacy Stegman says up to 25,000 vehicles a day travel that section. Stegman said initial reports indicate the slide left two large holes in a westbound bridge—one of them about 10 feet by 20 feet. She said eastbound and westbound lanes are blocked by boulders up to the size of a tractor-trailer rig.
Stegman added that there is still a large rock that CDOT geologists are worried might come crashing down. The hike up to that rock will take about two hours and that will take place on Tuesday. There is still no word on when I-70 is expected to reopen.
Several detour routes are in place:
From westbound I-70: exit at US 40/Empire to State Highway 13 and back to I-70; exit in Silverthorne and take State Highway 9 to US 40 and State Highway 13; exit at Wolcott/State Highway 131 to US 40 and State Highway 13.
From eastbound I-70: exit at Rifle/State Highway 13 to US 40 and back to I-70.

There’s a rock in Debeque canyon that hangs above the east bound lane that looks like it could come down pretty easily, it looks more like it could each year. If it does, it could easily block both directions and gouge a pretty big hole.
