The idea of having a mercury dump site is rubbing local residents and lawmakers the wrong way.
County Commissioner Janet Rowland says a mercury dump would ruin Grand Junction’s image and drive away tourism.
Madeleine Emberton, a tourist all the way from London, England, says she would think twice about coming to Grand Junction if there was a mercury dump. Emberton makes two trips a year to Grand Junction, and has even considered moving. Emberton says she wouldn’t consider moving to Grand Junction if there was a mercury dump site nearby.
“A lot of people would be put off,” Emberton said. “I don’t think mercury is in anyone’s interests.”
Department of Energy officials maintain that being home to the new mercury storage facility would be doing a great service for the country, and that it won’t affect the environment in any way. The new facility would be built above-ground and no mercury would be disposed of in the soil.
On July 21st, the D.O.E. will hold a meeting at the Two Rivers Convention Center to decide whether or not they want the government to keep considering Grand Junction for the dump site.
