Palisade, Colo.
Grand Valley rescue crews rushed to the Grand Mesa Wednesday after a group of cross-country skiers trigger an avalanche. The avalanche happened at around 1:00 p.m. at Thunderbird Trailhead, near Palisade Point. A man and a woman were skiing in the area when the snow came down the mountainside, according to Mesa County Search and Rescue Officials at the scene.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department has identified that man as 35-year old Seth Anderson. He owns locally-based Loki clothing company. They say he was hiking with Ann Driggers of Grand Junction. She is the president and CEO of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership.
Members of the search and rescue team set up command center at the end of Rapid Creek Road.
Anderson has two broken legs, according to authorities at the scene.
The scene is in a remote area near Palisade Point and crews are having a hard time getting to Anderson and Driggers.
St. Mary’s Care Flight was dispatched to the area to assist in the rescue. The Care Flight crew was dropped off 1/4 mile from where the victim is located and had to hike the rest of the way.
Authorities at the scene say the skiers had the proper avalanche safety equipment. According to St. Mary’s spokeswoman Anderson is in serious condition.
