A Nucla High science teacher and football coach is in trouble with the law. 50-year-old Thomas Helmbrecht was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of sexual exploitation of children and possessing sexually exploitive material.
Montrose County Sheriff’s officials say Helmbrecht had numerous explicit pictures of children. Helmbrecht bonded out of jail on Thursday and has been ordered to meet with a psychologist.
As a condition of his bond, Helmbrecht is not allowed contact with girls under 18--including his daughters.
News Channel 5 spoke with Helmbrecht on Friday. He refused to comment on the charges, but says he’s been employed at the school for five years. School officials at both the school and the school district did not return our phone calls.
Helmbrecht will be back in court next Thursday, when formal charges are expected to be filed.
