It’s a guilty verdict in the murder trial against Miriam Helmick.
Just after 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, the jury notified the judge they had reached their verdict. After just five hours of deliberating, the jury came to their decision.
The courtroom was packed as the 52-year-old Whitewater woman sat stone faced awaiting her fate.
Helmick was found guilty on all but one of the 15 counts against her. The jury found her guilty of first degree murder in the shooting death of her husband, Alan Helmick, and guilty of attempted murder for trying to set Alan’s car on fire in Delta. The jury has also found Helmick guilty on 12 counts of forgery for signing checks in Alan Helmick’s name. She was found not guilty on one count of forgery.
While the verdict was read, Miriam Helmick showed no emotion.
Alan Helmick was found dead in his home in June of 2008. The prosecution argued Miriam Helmick shot and killed her husband then tried to say it was a robbery gone bad. They argued the motive behind the murder was money. The prosecution says they were pleased with result after investing countless man hours into the case.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Tammy Eret said, “We’re elated. It’s a great verdict. The jury did their job and it’s good closure for the family.”
Helmick faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 3:30. It was moved to then because Alan Helmick’s son could not be present in the courtroom Tuesday.
